The Fallon Company pours concrete for Vertex Pharmaceuticals headquarters at Fan Pier

October 18, 2011 - Construction Design & Engineering

The Fallon Company has officially begun work on the new Vertex Pharmaceuticals' headquarters at Fan Pier with the first mat concrete pour. The pour consists of 2,500 cubic yards of concrete, delivered by 250 concrete trucks, pumped by three separate concrete pumps, into a 42-feet below grade foundation site and marks the first of five concrete placements necessary to support what will eventually hold an 18-story, 1.1 million s/f building.
To get to this point:
* approximately 5,600 truck-loads (126,000 cubic yards) of soil have been removed from the site.
* 317 tons of reinforcing steel has been placed using local union ironworkers.
* concrete was served (batched) from three different plant locations (Dorchester, Everett and Waltham).
* concrete placement took approximately 12 hours to complete
* concrete mat will serve as the foundation for the first tower crane.
