Filarski of USGBC honored with national award

Kenneth Filarski, chair of the Rhode Island Green Building Council of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and chair of the Upper Northeast regional committee of the USGBC was honored with a national award from the American Institute of Architects for the work that the Rhode Island Architects & Engineers Emergency Response Task Force 7 (RI AEER TF-7) performed in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in the towns of Westerly and Charlestown.
Filarski, who is Secretary of the Board for the RI AEER TF-7, was the only member who was in the field every day of RF-7 deployment, assessed the structural integrity and life safety parameters of hundreds of buildings.
Filarski presented the work of RI AEER TF-7 and gave a presentation offering sustainable hazard mitigation solutions for coastal development which incorporated LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND)at a regional conference which included the leaders of the national Association of State Flood Plain managers and Emergency Management officials from New England.
Filarski gave a presentation at a statewide Hurricane Conference on May 30, and will be presenting his work using the principles of ecology and LEED for Neighborhood Development at the National Convention of the Association of State Flood Plain Managers in Hartford, Conn. later this month.
Filarski is the founder and principal of Filarski Architecture Planning Research located in Providence.
