Farmington, CT Cambridge-based Tsoi/Kobus & Associates is one of the nation’s leading architecture, planning, and interior design firms for life sciences, college and university, healthcare, and commercial real estate projects. The firm is known for creating environments that advance the discovery of new knowledge and for award-winning designs that combine cutting-edge technology with compassion and creativity.

We are proud to share our project, the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX) in Farmington. This LEED-NC(v3) Gold-certified project was recently awarded a 2015 Go Beyond Award from the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I²SL) in San Diego, CA for design which goes “beyond the facility itself to consider shared resources, infrastructure and services, and neighboring communities and energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable designs, systems, and products.” JAX is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution whose mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.  The project is situated on 16 acres of previously developed land adjacent to the University of Connecticut Health Center’s Farmington campus and is designed to house 300 biomedical researchers, technicians and support staff - forging a new, collaborative scientific cluster.

Several sustainable design features and strategies were built into the overall design of the project, including use of a 250kW cogeneration facility, run-around air side heat recovery, site planning which features an accessible courtyard and bioswales to manage stormwater and protect adjacent wetlands, chilled beams, LED lighting, regionally-sourced limestone, and rooftop rainwater harvesting for irrigation.
