Needham, MA One Wingate Way, an independent living community owned and operated by Wingate Healthcare, was named runner up by Senior Housing News in the nationwide 2017 Architecture & Design Awards. One Wingate Way received runner up in the independent category.

The Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards recognize senior living excellence in the United States by celebrating communities that improve the lives of seniors through innovative design. Of the 80 communities from across the nation that competed in the 2017 awards, only nine were selected as winners. Senior Housing News evaluates communities through a scoring system with several categories, including design elements, community integration, amenities and lifestyle features.

“One Wingate Way was designed with thoughtful attention to the specific needs of independent seniors,” said Scott Schuster, founder and president of Wingate Healthcare. “In addition to the modern, beautiful design, the community provides a safe, stimulating and easy environment for seniors to feel at home. We’re proud to have received this award as recognition of the innovative design we have cultivated for our residents.”

One Wingate Way is a 52-unit community that emphasizes wellness, socialization and active engagement for independent seniors through a destination-based, open-space floor plan. Each artfully appointed space includes shared areas for interaction, critical for drawing residents out of their apartments and keeping them cognitively active to prevent isolation, fight monotony and improve their quality of life. The incorporation of biophilic design concepts creates a pedestrian-friendly campus, linking interior spaces with exterior green spaces and sightlines to the outdoors. This purposeful connection to the outdoors allows for ample light to penetrate the facility, and encourages a focus on aspects of the natural world that contribute to health and wellbeing.

The community’s two-story aquatic center, Aqua by Wingate, features a wellness spa home to yoga, meditation, fitness and massage rooms. Program spaces include an immersive theater, dining room with display kitchen and pizza oven, living room with fireplace, bistro, and outdoor patio with fire pit and water feature. The formation of these intimate spaces creates a boutique hotel sensibility with a contemporary yet approachable design aesthetic.
