What trends or innovations do you believe will shape the future of your field, and how are you positioning yourself (or your firm) to be at the forefront? While not new, I believe BIM will be integral to the industry as it continues to develop and become more accessible. There is the possibility to assist tremendously in design and cost control, streamline communication with clients and trade partners, as well as provide data to facilities after a project is completed. As an estimator, I continue to research and understand the benefits BIM has for my role, and hope it is something that can be utilized moving forward.
Who or what has inspired you most in your career, and what advice would you share with the next generation of women entering the A/E/C industry? I’ve felt inspired by a site supervisor who has been in the industry for 40+ years, who always encourages me and shows faith in my abilities as a woman in construction, despite what the “norm” has been during his career - as well as by a co-worker who is an extremely strong headed woman and successful business owner within the industry. She helped me see my strengths and encouraged me to pursue the change from PM to Estimator. I plan to always remind women in construction that for every one person who may try to knock them down, there are more people rooting for their success.
What’s your favorite way to recharge or get inspired outside of work? I recharge best when spending time with friends.
