300 Binney Street certified LEED Platinum Core & Shell
September 26, 2014 - Spotlights
300 Binney St. was certified LEED Platinum Core and Shell in January. Located at Kendall Center, 300 Binney St. is the epitome of transit oriented development, and is in close walking distance to rail, bus, and bike paths. The project earned all related sustainable site LEED points, as well as the distinction of exemplary performance in the credit category. 300 Binney St. was able to achieve the highest level of LEED certification due to an innovative district energy strategy. Heat and power are provided by Biogen Idec's cogeneration facility. The building is not directly tied into the local utility gas and power network. By taking a district approach to energy generation and distribution, Biogen has reduced energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity 57% and 64% respectively, and has saved over $25 million in energy-related costs. The 300 Binney St. building was designed to operate 38% more efficient than energy code requires. Water consumption was also carefully considered by the project team. Water efficiency measures including low flow fixtures and an irrigation-free landscape design resulted in the achievement of a 42% reduction in potable water consumption. 300 Binney St. is the second LEED Platinum building Boston Properties has built in partnership with Biogen Idec.
