Consigli Construction Co., Inc.'s Portland office has completed construction of the new 22,500 s/f Importation/Isolation Facility for The Jackson Laboratory.
Located within the biomedical research firm's 43-acre campus, one mile from downtown, the three-story facility accommodates expanding research needs and will receive new test specimens of genetically defined mice prior to introducing them into sterile laboratory environments. Building within The Jackson Lab's operational research campus, Consigli adhered to advanced measures of construction in order to meet stringent requirements for cleanliness and disease control. The complexity of the project necessitated the use of 3-D mechanical coordination and clash detection systems to expedite the procurement process and installation of building systems.
"We worked very closely with The Jackson Lab to carefully integrate the construction schedule within their experiment schedules," said David Thomas, Consigli project executive. "Extensive exterior site work was conducted only three days per week to allow 'quiet days' for ongoing research in neighboring buildings."
Designed by RMW architecture & interiors of Sacramento, the $6 million facility includes cryopreservation storage, laboratory and support areas, animal distribution facilities and a locker room. Mechanical and electrical engineering services were provided by WBRC A/E in Bangor and structural engineering services were provided by Becker Structural in Portland.
