Since 1989, Ronald McDonald House of Providence has cared for thousands of families of hospitalized children, providing them with food, shelter, and emotional support. Yet in the past three years, the house has had to turn away 185 families due to lack of available accommodation. Gilbane Building Company, in collaboration with New England Medical Design, Inc. (NEMD Architects), will expand and renovate the facility, adding 11,500 s/f and 10 new bedrooms.
"When you have an opportunity to work on a project in your own back yard that directly affects people in your community it becomes very personal to the team," said Stephen Duvel, Rhode Island operations manager. "We are proud to partner with Ronald McDonald House of Providence on this vital program and will work to safeguard families from any disruption during their stay at the House while construction is ongoing."
Having broken ground on July 15, the project will be completed in three phases to allow the existing facility to safely continue operations and supporting families. Upon completion, Ronald McDonald House of Providence will have the capacity to service 28 families at one time, with an average of 130 additional families per year.
