Local chapter to help celebrate rich ethical heritage during IREM ethics awareness

Boston Metropolitan Chapter No. 4. of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM®) will join 92 other IREM® chapters across the U.S. and internationally in September to mark "IREM Ethics Awareness Month." Designed to showcase the 80-year-old organization's historical commitment to professional ethics, "the observance will spotlight the fact that IREM® Members don't just talk the talk when it comes to ethics, but they also walk the walk," said local chapter president David Barrett, CPM®, ARM®. "Consider: As a condition of membership, all IREM® Members must pledge to adhere to the rigorously enforced IREM® Code of Professional Ethics, with violations subject to serious disciplinary action, including expulsion." Among the many initiatives planned for Ethics Awareness Month are a national marketing and communications campaign highlighting IREM's rich ethical heritage, plus a variety of interactive programs at the local level drawn, in part, from a specially prepared Ethics Awareness Chapter Toolkit developed by members of IREM's Ethics and Discipline Committee. Boston Metropolitan Chapter No. 4 is one of the organization's 80 chapters nationwide. Serving real estate professionals who manage all property types, we have been an integral force in the New England region, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont area since 1938. We are dedicated to delivering leading-edge networking and educational offerings for every stage of your career, evolving with you to provide lifelong professional development opportunities. The New England Chapter #4 was founded on May 4, 1938, providing IREM services within its geographical region. The growth of the chapter over the past 76 years has paralleled the expansion of the real estate industry and the property management profession in its region of influences. Over the years, the chapter has nurtured and promoted the founding and forming of three chapters. These are: Chapter #51 - serving the state of Connecticut, Chapter #88 - serving the state of Rhode Island, as a result of the formation of these chapters, the chapter identification was changed in 1977 to Boston Metropolitan Chapter #4. During 1987 and 1988, the Boston Chapter actively pursued and promoted the Alpha Committee comprising chapter members from the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The Boston Chapter has maintained continued interest in the progress of these chapters by holding joint meetings, sponsorship of regional meetings, and avoiding educational conflicts. Since the chapter's founding, the chapter has grown steadily and continuously in spite of the loss of membership to the founding of the new chapters. The growth of the chapter has progressed over the years due to intensive committee service; cooperative and strong liaison with related professional groups; with government agencies; and strong involvement in the community. This has indeed spelled out the formula for success and continued membership expansion. The chapter has established Distinguished Service Awards, which serve to honor prominent individuals in the community and profession. It has established a "CPM of the Year", ARM of the Year, Candidate of the Year, Student of the Year, Associate member of the Years, ACM of the Year, New England Property Manager "Life Time Achievement Award", and Friend of IREM® of the Year Awards, for which nominations are solicited by the general membership. In addition, a special recognition award/s is also given at the discretion of the past president's committee Editor's Note: IREM® has published a "Real Life Ethics Case Study Report" that explains each article of the IREM® Code of Professional Ethics in layman's terms and provides preventative tips. To request a copy of the report, e-mail Sharon Peters at speters@irem.org. The Boston Metropolitan Chapter #4 looks forward to upcoming year with pride of accomplishments and service for its 70 plus years of involvement with the real estate property management profession. Its sights will continue to focus on service to our membership, profession and community.
