MassDevelopment awards $779,397 to
small businesses through Biz-M-Power

April 25, 2025 - Retail

Boston, MA MassDevelopment’s Growth Capital Division provided $779,397 in grants from the Biz-M-Power Grant Program to help 62 small businesses in Massachusetts strengthen and grow. Ranging from $2,500-$20,000, the grants will empower businesses to (1) acquire, expand, improve, or lease a facility, (2) purchase or capital lease equipment, or (3) meet other capital needs of the business. Businesses were required to crowdfund via the Patronicity platform in order to receive a matching grant from the program, inviting customers and community members to contribute to the business goal and leveraging the program funding by 2x.

“Small businesses form the backbone of our economy, creating jobs and contributing to vibrant downtowns and neighborhoods across the state,” said economic development secretary Yvonne Hao, who serves as chair of MassDevelopment’s board of directors. “Biz-M-Power continues to be an important tool for helping these businesses grow and succeed in Massachusetts.”

“MassDevelopment is pleased to co-invest along with communities in every region of the state to help small business owners build the future of their companies,” said MassDevelopment president and CEO Navjeet Bal. “We’re grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration and our partners in the legislature for their support of this key small business resource.”

Administered by MassDevelopment, the Biz-M-Power Grant Program was created in 2021 by the former Mass Growth Capital Corporation to help businesses recover from the impacts of COVID-19. The grants were awarded through the fourth round of the program, which opened for applications in March 2024 with the goal of helping businesses continue to strengthen and grow. Mass Growth Capital Corporation merged with MassDevelopment in February 2025, becoming the growth capital division of MassDevelopment.

Some of the awarded projects include:

• $19,926.72 to Clark Brothers Orchards LLC in Ashfield, which will use funds to convert a portion of a barn into a wheelchair-accessible farm shop, including installing insulation, electrical, and carpentry.

• $18,985.38 to sweeties LLC in Boston, a boutique New Zealand-style ice cream shop, which will use funds to expand its offerings by buying ice cream machines, freezers, a waffle cone machine, and components for outfitting a mobile ice cream cart.

• $4,527.73 to Santa Beauty Studio in Lawrence, which will use funds to grow by adding another beauty station, chair, mirrors, a professional dryer for curly hair, and a vaporizer to give personalized treatments for curly hair. The company will also add other salon equipment such as lighting for photographs and the eyelash station, a table for eyelashes, new mobile stations to make life easier for those who work in the salon, a makeup station, and a coffee area.

• $10,009 to Sompetch Katisomsakuz in Shirley, a coffee roaster specialized in Asian coffee doing business as Newbery Street Coffee Roaster, which will use funds to buy equipment to support the opening of Newbery Street Café.

• $20,000 to Food Revolution, LLC in Stoneham, a shared culinary and event space, which will use funds for a downpayment to support the purchase of its building. MassDevelopment previously provided a $20,000 Collaborative Workspace Program grant to help Food Revolution build out its basement for food storage and prep space.

“As a young ice cream business, sweeties opened in Roslindale with minimal equipment but quickly struggled to meet demand for our New Zealand-style soft serve,” said Anika Gramsey, owner of sweeties LLC. “With help from the Boston Main Streets Foundation, we applied to the Biz-M-Power grant program, raising $19K in 30 days. The matching grant funds allowed us to purchase additional equipment, expand our product line, add pre-spun pints, quarts, and ice cream sandwiches, launch catering and events, and boost in-store sales!”
