McNamara/Salvia, Inc. has provided structural engineering services for The Beal Companies, LLP for several of their projects, the latest located at 800 Huntington Ave.
This project involves the adaptive reuse of a 1900s concrete framed parking garage to create 6,600 s/f of new medical office and outpatient surgery space as well as 131 parking spaces on 3 ½ levels in the Longwood Medical Area. Rehabilitating and expanding an existing building along Huntington Ave. provided several specific challenges.
The existing roof of the concrete parking garage was removed due to structural and usability concerns to allow for the addition of two new steel framed levels with composite slab on metal deck construction above the existing concrete second floor.
The new steel - framed garage expansion was located at the rear of the existing building on an upward sloping site bounded by existing public ways that were to remain open during construction. The design team utilized a system of temporary and permanent soil nails to provide lateral earth support of excavation and allow construction to proceed without impacting the neighboring streets. Concentric steel-braced frames were utilized for the structure lateral support system.
