Boston, MA Robert Nickerson, age 85, of Bourne, passed away on Wednesday, October 4. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Judith (Chamberlain) Nickerson. He was the father to three children, Cheryl Nickerson Franco and husband Tom, of Nashua, N.H., Douglas Nickerson and wife Wendy, of Bourne, Richard Nickerson and wife Dawn, of Bangor, ME. He also leaves a sister, Marion Paulson, of Duxbury; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Nickerson was born in Quincy, son of Archer Nickerson and Dorothy (Miller) Nickerson and grew up in Weymouth.
Bob had a very fulfilling and successful career in the banking industry. He was president of the Newton Cooperative Bank, Merchants Cooperative Bank and Winchester Savings Bank. He was actively involved in the industry and was a leader in many community bank initiatives during that time. He had very fond memories of the great friendships that were formed in those years.
Upon retiring from banking, he started a successful venture, Nickerson Financial Corp., with his two sons, with which he was involved for almost two decades.
Upon graduating from Boston University, Bob joined the Navy and was commissioned, as Lieutenant, in the Air Borne Early Warning Squadron. After being discharged from the service, he and Judy lived in Arlington moving from there to Needham and finally to Cape Cod.
Bob was a Mason, with the Norfolk Lodge, in Needham, Massachusetts. He was also an active member of the First Congregational Church of Needham and The Falmouth Congregational Church in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Through his deep and abiding faith, and his unwavering desire to help others, he was always involved with numerous committees, in these churches.
Interment was Friday, October 27, 2017, at 2 p.m., at Massachusetts National Cemetery, in Bourne, MA.
A Memorial service was held Saturday, October 28, at 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of Falmouth, Falmouth, Mas.
