What trends are you seeing in your field this year? The pure power of women! I am seeing more women throughout all facets of the construction industry– in the technology side, on site, and in architecture. I’ve enjoyed the chance to meet with a number of great professional women and it’s a joy to see so many of them emerging in this field!
Who or what inspired you to join the construction industry? My parents did! Both of my parents are engineers by trade, and have that strong technical backgrounds. My father in fact is still a licensed contractor in Connecticut, where I am from originally. As a youngster, I loved working on construction projects – helping to build decks, walkways and fixing windows. My parents told me not to be afraid to get my hands dirty and encouraged me to get a good education and see where it would take me. And it took me to a field of work that I absolutely love.
When I’m not working... I am probably involved in some sort of soccer activity! It started with me playing soccer, from youth, through college, and now as an adult. It then led to me becoming a certified referee (which I still am). It was a great way to expand my love of the game, and hang out with my family, as they also became referees. Now, I’m a volunteer youth soccer coach for the city of Attleboro, where my husband and I live. For the past few years, I’ve coached players ranging from fourth to sixth grade. What can I say, I love soccer!
