Woonsocket, RI Ryan Family Amusements is expanding its footprint with their latest acquisition of the Walnut Hill Bowl. This expansion marks Ryan’s second location in the state, complementing their existing game room on Newport’s waterfront.

The bowling center, now named Ryan’s, was originally opened in 1974 by the Brunswick Corporation. In 2006, it was purchased by Robert Toth, who has operated it for the past 19 years.

Ryan’s plans for the venue include a renovation with enhancements to the offerings and aesthetics. Plans include:

• Addition of a large arcade featuring skills games, video games, claw games and VR;

• Conversion from coin-operated arcade games to a card-swipe system;

• A prize counter;

• Improved digital scoring on the bowling lanes;

• Upgrades to the restaurant and bar;

• Dedicated party spaces

• Cosmetic improvements; inside and outside, including a new façade.

The renovations will be phased across the next several months in order to minimize any disruption to service. The center will remain open throughout the entire process.

“We’re thrilled to expand our footprint in Rhode Island and can’t wait to build on the solid record of success that Walnut Hill Bowl has achieved,” said Zack McCaul, Ryan’s director of operations. “Customers of Walnut Hill Bowl can expect the same friendly service and culture they’ve come to know and expect. And by early fall, they’ll be able to enjoy new attractions, an improved dining experience, and a revitalized space perfect for birthday parties, corporate events, and gatherings.”

Once completed, the 29,000 s/f center will feature 24 lanes of ten pin bowling and will continue its long-standing tradition of hosting leagues.

“We recognize that Walnut Hill Bowl is home to a vibrant and dedicated community of league bowlers – a passion we are committed to nurturing at every bowling venue we manage,” said McCaul. “We are excited to continue hosting and supporting these exceptional leagues.”

The Walnut Hill team will be led by general manager Bill Tessier. A Woonsocket native, Tessier has been managing the facility for the past two years and is an accomplished amateur bowler. His introduction to the sport began at age five on the lanes at Walnut Hill Bowl.

His notable achievements include being inducted into the Rhode Island USBC Hall of Fame (2024) and an NEBA (New England Bowlers Association) title. He has shot close to 90 games in the 800 series and placed 5th in the True Amateur Tournament in Las Vegas, bowling near perfect games of 279 in each of the three qualifying rounds. He is a regional staff member and ambassador for MOTIV, a leader in the bowling equipment and apparel industry.

“I’m excited to lead the Walnut Hill team and continue fostering the welcoming, fun environment that has made this venue a community staple for so many years,” said Tessier. “Bowling has been a passion of mine since I was 5, and I’m proud to now bring my experience, dedication, and love for the sport to help grow and enhance the experience for our members and guests.”
