December 19, 2025 - Construction Design & Engineering

Newton, MA Gilbane Building joined The Fessenden School community and partners DBI Projects, Utile, and LeMessurier to celebrate the topping-off of the new dining facility. This milestone marks significant progress on the construction of a 21st century dining hall designed to foster connection, sustainability, and innovation.

“This project is a significant priority for the school and is going to support Fessenden students for generations to come. We want to thank Gilbane and all of the trades for their attention to detail, ability to work through challenges as they arise, and their willingness to continuously evaluate and rework the schedule – which has made it possible to be here today” said Mike Grossman, chief operations officer of The Fessenden School.

“Safety is our North Star, but just as important is our commitment to building more than buildings by giving back to the communities we serve. This project is especially meaningful to my family and me, and we’re proud to deliver innovative solutions like mass timber while working as a team to overcome challenges and keep progress on track,” said Dan Gilbane, managing director & president of Gilbane Building.

Serving over 1,000 meals daily, the new dining facility will feature a highly efficient all-electric kitchen and a flexible dining room design that divides the dining room into two zones separated by a central servery and flex bar.

With the new facility, Fessenden will be well equipped to meet the needs of a diverse population while continuing its tradition of family style dining.

At 19,335 s/f, the building showcases a renewable, low-carbon mass timber structure, providing warmth and character while meeting sustainability goals, including compliance with the Massachusetts Specialized Opt-In Stretch Energy Code. The exterior integrates seamlessly with the historic campus aesthetic, introducing subtle material variations for visual interest. Outdoor enhancements include a patio and refreshed landscaping framing the signature Hyde Slope lawn, creating a welcoming environment for gatherings and events.

This project represents a bold investment in The Fessenden School’s future, enhancing the campus experience, strengthening connections across the school community, and ensuring that facilities reflect the school’s commitment to tradition, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
