Ionomr Innovations holds ribbon cutting for new development and manufacturing center at Hood Park

Charlestown, MA Ionomr Innovations, Inc. (Ionomr) celebrated the grand opening of its new 22,000 s/f development and manufacturing center at Hood Park, a 20-acre, mixed-use development. Ionomr is a global leader in the development and production of Hydrocarbon PFAS-free Ion Exchange Materials (IEMs) necessary to enable the innovative high performance electrochemistry solutions required to decarbonize the planet.
Developed at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia in 2017, Ionomr’s breakthrough IEMs represent the first major advancement in membrane technology in more than five decades. The company’s products enable developers and integrators to significantly enhance system performance, improve durability, eliminate toxic components, increase recyclability, and reduce costs far earlier in the commercialization curve than previously anticipated.
With existing R&D and manufacturing hubs in Vancouver, Canada and Rochester, N.Y., Ionomr looks to continue strengthening its ability to serve customers across the hydrogen, fuel cell, and energy storage sectors as demand for decarbonization technologies rapidly accelerates.
The new Hood Park-based facility expands Ionomr’s U.S. footprint and positions the company at the center of Greater Boston’s innovation and R&D community. Located at 500 Rutherford Ave., the center is expected to generate more than 40 new jobs over the next three years and further strengthens Ionomr’s applications capabilities, service offerings, and reach.
Hood Park’s lease with Ionomr underscores the campus’s reputation as a leading hub for clean tech, climate tech, life sciences, and R&D companies seeking best-in-class lab and office space in Greater Boston. The newest campus tenant joins cutting-edge climate tech and tough tech companies already on-site at Hood Park, including Lydian, ArkeaBio, Solid BioSciences, and Indigo Ag.
“I want to congratulate Ionomr on this exciting milestone,” said representative Daniel Ryan, 2nd Suffolk District. “Their innovation in the sustainable technology in space is a great example of the cutting-edge businesses thriving here at Hood Park and Rutherford Ave. corridor.”
“The opening of our new development and manufacturing center at Hood Park represents a major milestone in Ionomr’s mission to transform the materials at the core of clean energy technologies. This facility allows us to expand development, enhance customer support, and accelerate commercialization for our PFAS-free ion-exchange membranes and polymers,” said Bill Haberlin, chief executive officer of Ionomr Innovations and Ben Britton, chief technology officer and co-founder of Ionomr. “Hood Park is the ideal home for this next phase of growth, offering the infrastructure, talent, and climate-tech community needed as we work to drive the global transition to cleaner, more efficient energy systems.”
“I am thrilled to welcome Ionomr’s new manufacturing facility to my district,” said senator Sal DiDomenico. “This development will help Massachusetts lead in efforts to decarbonize our society, bring new jobs to our community, and boost the local economy. I am excited to see all of the incredible innovation that will be accomplished here in Charlestown.”
“Boston’s future as a climate leader depends on our ability to scale clean technologies that produce and utilize emissions-free energy,” said Boston city councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata. “Ionomr’s investment in Hood Park is an exciting step in that direction for Charlestown and the entire city. As we work to transition away from fossil fuels toward a greener, more sustainable future, advanced electrochemical solutions, like those developed by Ionomr, will play a critical role in enabling cleaner hydrogen, more durable fuel cells, and next generation decarbonization systems. I’m thrilled to welcome Ionomr to Hood Park and look forward to seeing the innovation and opportunity they will bring to Charlestown.”
“We are proud to celebrate the opening of Ionomr’s new manufacturing facility in Hood Park,” said Naomi Berlin, assistant secretary of business growth with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic Development. “Through the Mass Leads Act, we’re making the long-term investments that keep our state at the forefront of global climatetech. Ionomr chose Boston for its world-class engineering and manufacturing talent, and we’re thrilled to welcome them as partners in strengthening our clean energy economy.”
“With Boston’s leadership in innovation and climate action, I am excited for Ionomr to become a part of our thriving local climate tech economy,” said Brian Swett, Chief Climate Officer for the City of Boston. “Boston has worked tirelessly over the years to be a global hub of sustainability and innovation, and our local industries working to combat climate change are a testament to that progress.”
“By expanding to Boston, Ionomr joins a cohort of cutting-edge companies,” said Alia Hamada Forrest, Director of Business Strategy for the City of Boston’s Office of Economic Opportunity & Inclusion. “This expansion to Boston reaffirms the city’s position as a global leader in innovation and technology. We look forward to supporting Ionomr and other cutting-edge companies to further their goals and support a sustainable future.”
“We are excited to welcome Ionomr to Hood Park’s climate tech hub as they expand their groundbreaking work in clean energy materials,” said Chris Kaneb, Manager of Hood Park LLC. “Their commitment to advancing next-generation technologies is strongly aligned with Hood Park’s commitment to innovation, and we’re excited to support their continued growth here in Charlestown.”
