Hartford, CT Anthony Amenta, co-founder of Amenta Emma Architects, will retire on February 13, 2026, concluding a 40-year career dedicated to creating community-centered architecture across New England.
Amenta co-founded the award-winning firm in 1985 with Robert Emma, establishing a practice committed to New Urbanism principles and inspired design with positive impacts for the places we live, work, and learn. Under his leadership, the firm expanded to include a Boston office and earned recognition for projects ranging from mixed-use developments to workplace and institutional renovations.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to create, build, and lead this prestigious and highly regarded design firm,” said Amenta. “I have enjoyed a fabulous career with the firm and have immensely enjoyed every day and every role I have played along the way.”
Notable projects led by Amenta include West Hartford’s Blue Back Sq., the Connecticut State Office Building renovation, Housatonic Community College’s Lafayette Hall addition in Bridgeport, and The O’Connell Companies headquarters in Holyoke, Mass.
Beyond his design work, Amenta served as chairman of the West Hartford Design Review Committee, helping establish one of Connecticut’s first form-based design review processes.
He also served on the West Hartford Housing Authority and as an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford.
“Tony has been an instrumental force in building Amenta Emma, from the infancy of the firm in Hartford to the more recent expansion of the company in Boston,” said Michael Tyre, AIA, President of Amenta Emma Architects. “His commitment to client success and mentorship has been an inspiration to us all.”
Amenta Emma Architects continues under the leadership of President Michael Tyre and principals Robert Swain, Myles Brown, Eric Weyant, and Jenna McClure.
