What women should know about industry opportunities: I wish more women knew more about the opportunity in general in the construction industry, and there were a push for this career among young people in high school and/or college. I personally did not know that construction estimating was even a career path when I was much younger, but I am so happy I ended up in this position. There is so much that happens behind the scenes on the preconstruction side that is not really known outside the industry. The construction industry is so much more than the part of the builds people see.

Advice for women starting their careers: I encourage anyone looking to begin their careers in construction to absorb as much information as possible. Lean on the experienced people around you to teach you what they know and explore resources such as industry magazines, the Internet, and conferences. There is so much to learn and it can feel intimidating at first, but the more you know, the more confident you will be and the more rewarding your work will feel.

Habit that keeps you focused: I make lists: daily to-do and week-ahead plan. Crossing things off is rewarding and I stay on track. This helps me be calm in a fast-paced industry.
