2026 Women in Construction: Petra Leone Steriti, AMCON

What women should know about industry opportunities: I wish more women understood the great opportunities. Construction is a growing industry nationally and a steady one in Massachusetts, yet there are persistent labor shortages. Fewer people in the rising generations are entering the trades and long-time workers are leaving – and not enough people understand the opportunities in the trades. In addition, technology, sustainability, and artificial intelligence are changing the way construction is done. These dynamics are creating more room for women. Most of my career has been outside of this industry and I wish I had found it sooner!
Advice for women starting their careers: Find an experienced business woman as a mentor and work (not necessarily in the same company) with her over a year or two, even longer if that’s possible. She doesn’t have to be in the industry. She should be someone who can help you understand yourself, your strengths, your gaps, what drives you, and how to navigate business and relationships. You should be authentic, introspective, and earnestly strive to be your best self. You’ll only get as much from a mentor as you’re willing to put into the relationship.
What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity? So many somethings: yoga, pottery, gardening, thrifting, time with family and friends, routine organizing!
