2026 Women in Construction: Melissa Baldwin, NEI General Contracting
Director of Human Resources
NEI General Contracting
What women should know about industry opportunities: I wish more women knew that companies are actively looking to hire them. Women in construction are in high demand as the industry works to address a nationwide skilled labor shortage. Their perspectives and leadership strengthen project teams and drive overall success. In 2024, women represented 11.2% of the construction workforce nationwide, and NEI is proud to share that 21% of our workforce is made up of women.
Advice for women starting their careers: Don’t be intimidated by the fact that construction is still predominantly male. The opportunities for women in this industry continue to grow each year, and that momentum isn’t slowing down. Women are making an impact in every area of construction, not just in the back office. From project management to superintendent roles in the field, women are highly sought after for the leadership, perspective, and problem-solving skills they bring to every job site.
Habit that keeps you focused: Daily intentional movement keeps me focused and gives me something to look forward to after work.
