2026 Women in Construction: Yordy Tesfaye, Shawmut Design and Construction
Assistant Project Manager
Shawmut Design and Construction
What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community? My current work on FM’s new campus in Norwood, MA has been what I am most proud of in my career. Not only is it one of the largest projects Shawmut has been involved in, but I’ve had the incredible opportunity to contribute across multiple stages of its lifecycle while growing my skillset through Shawmut’s CMST program, a training initiative for early-career construction professionals. Seeing how a building comes to life – from the inside out and from start to finish – has been personally fulfilling and has allowed me to better understand and meet my client’s needs through sustained collaboration.
What do you wish more women knew about the opportunities available in the construction industry today? I wish more women knew just how many different paths the construction industry offers. There are opportunities spanning project and field management, design management, finance, and many other roles that can provide meaningful professional growth. The industry is also filled with people who are willing to teach, mentor, and share their knowledge. If you’re open to learning, construction can offer an impactful, fulfilling, and long-lasting career.
What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry? One perspective I would share with women starting their careers in construction is that there is a place for you. The industry can feel intimidating at first, but if you stay curious and open to learning from those around you, you will find your footing and a strong sense of belonging.
What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity? I always try to make time for sketching and painting – it helps me slow down, reset, and find balance outside of work.
