What do you wish more women knew about the opportunities available in the construction industry today? I wish more women knew that construction is more than what you see when passing a jobsite. Construction is synonymous with body-toiling, blue-collar work, but there are more opportunities “behind the scenes.” Architecture, engineering, and project management are also options that the field offers that are critical to any project’s progress. Women are naturally good at communication and building relationships, and offer a different point of view. I hope more women look into and pursue all construction positions. Hopefully, they too can find their passion here.

What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry? One piece of advice I would offer is this: ask questions – no matter how obvious or even absurd they may seem. These questions help to build relationships, establish an open line of communication, and further one’s understanding of the topic. This will enable you to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues, while also engaging in informed discussions and communicating effectively. With new materials and systems continually evolving, being a lifelong learner is critical. Even at the start of my career, I wouldn’t change my approach – I would still ask questions and keep learning.

What habit or routine helps you stay focused or motivated during a busy week? A routine that helps me is to write daily or weekly to-do lists that include tasks, meetings, and important dates.
