2026 Women in Construction: Alexis Mangan, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co.
Industry Manager
The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co.
What do you wish more women knew about the opportunities available in the construction industry today? I wish more women knew just how wide the spectrum of opportunities truly is, and how much the industry wants and needs their talents. There is a place for every skill set now, not just the physical trades. It’s an industry where communication, collaboration and strategic thinking are just as valuable as technical skills, and the path for women is clearer than it’s ever been. And most importantly to me, few industries offer the opportunity to point to a skyline, a school or a hospital, and say “I helped build that”. The sense of purpose and pride is very powerful.
What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry? Choose to take up space, and feel confident that your voice, your ideas, and your leadership belong here. Construction is an industry built on teamwork, problem solving, and trust, and women bring strengths that elevate all three. Early in your career, it can be easy to assume you need to stay quiet until you have more experience. But the truth is that your perspective is valuable on day one. Speak up in meetings, ask questions, and seek out mentors who recognize your potential and will advocate for you. And most importantly, believe that you belong.
What habit or routine helps you stay focused or motivated during a busy week? I approach each week with a day-by-day mindset rather than viewing all the deliverables at once, which can be overwhelming.
