JGE Architecture + Design celebrates completion of 45-unit Brookley Flats

May 22, 2026 - Construction Design & Engineering

Boston, MA JGE Architecture + Design has completed Brookley Flats, a new multifamily residential development in Jamaica Plain that delivers 45 affordable homeownership opportunities, including dedicated artist live/work units, within a sustainability-driven community. Developed in partnership with Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corp. and Causeway Development, the project marks the largest affordable homeownership development built and occupied in Boston to date.

Located at 10 Stonley Rd., Brookley Flats transforms a former industrial site into a four-story, 45,000 s/f residential building that prioritizes connectivity, creativity, and long-term environmental performance. The development features a mix of modern residences alongside community-oriented amenities, including a shared roof deck, gallery space, bicycle storage, and a 19-space stacker garage, all designed to support both individual living and collective engagement.

“Brookley Flats reflects our commitment to creating housing that goes beyond function to foster community, identity, and opportunity,” said Jonathan Garland, president and founder of JGE Architecture + Design. “By integrating artist live/workspaces and shared amenities into a high-performance building, we were able to create a place that not only meets Boston’s housing needs but also celebrates the character and creativity of Jamaica Plain.”

The project brings meaningful impact to a neighborhood long defined by its strong arts presence and community-driven culture. Ground-floor gallery and exhibit space provide a platform for local artists, while the inclusion of live/work units supports creative professionals in maintaining both their practice and residence within the same community. Shared outdoor and indoor spaces, including a rooftop deck and gathering areas, encourage interaction and foster a sense of belonging among residents.

Designed with sustainability at its core, Brookley Flats is an all-electric, solar-ready building aligned with the City of Boston’s climate goals. The project is Passive House (PHIUS) certified, incorporating a high-performance envelope, advanced air-sealing strategies, and efficient mechanical systems to reduce energy demand while enhancing indoor comfort, air quality, and long-term resilience.

Its transit-oriented location and bike-friendly infrastructure further support low-carbon lifestyles, offering residents convenient access to public transportation and nearby green spaces while reducing reliance on cars.

The completion of Brookley Flats represents a collaborative effort among a multidisciplinary team, including Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corp. and Causeway Development (Co-Developers), H+O Structural Engineering, BLW Engineering Inc., Michael D’Angelo Landscape Architecture, Sherwood Consulting & Design LLC, Haycon Inc., and DVM Housing Partners.

Brookley Flats stands as a model for how thoughtful design, sustainable practices, and community-focused development can come together to create lasting impact, expanding access to homeownership while strengthening the social and cultural fabric of Boston’s neighborhoods.
