Needham, MA Onyx Partners Ltd., a commercial real estate investment and development firm, has acquired the former You-Do-It Electronics Center building at 40 Franklin St. The firm has commenced redevelopment of the building into its new headquarters, with a strong emphasis on preserving the property’s historic character and architectural integrity.

For nearly 60 years, the You-Do-It Electronics Center stood as one of the most recognizable landmarks along Rte. 128. Founded in 1949 by John Ahigian as a TV and radio repair shop in Boston’s South End, the business relocated to its purpose-built home on Franklin St. in 1965, just as the Rte. 128 corridor was emerging as the nation’s first high-tech hub and earning the nickname “America’s Technology Highway.” After 75 years in business, the store closed its doors in 2024, marking the end of a defining chapter in Greater Boston’s commercial and technological history.

Onyx Partners’ redevelopment will honor that legacy while bringing the historical building into its next chapter. Plans call for a modernization of the interior and exterior, restoring the structure’s mid-century bones, upgrading the building’s systems and finishes to institutional-quality office standards, and reimagining the property as a modern workplace at one of the most visible addresses on Rte. 128. The team is committed to preserving the building’s most beloved feature: the iconic You-Do-It Electronics billboard will remain in place as a permanent local landmark.

“We are honored to carry on the tradition of this remarkable building and to revitalize a property that has meant so much to Needham and the greater Boston community. Our commitment is to breathe new life into this site for the next 50-plus years while preserving the history that You-Do-It brought to Needham and the Rte. 128 corridor,” said Anton Melchionda, founding partner, Onyx Partners.

The property will serve as Onyx Partners’ long-term headquarters, consolidating the firm’s growing operations into a single, purpose-fit home. The Franklin St. redevelopment underscores the firm’s commitment to Needham as both its hometown and the long-term base for its expanding national platform.
