Building the future workforce: ASM launches new student awards initiative

June 26, 2026 - Construction Design & Engineering

In 2026, ASM launched its Build the Future Awards, a new initiative designed to support and recognize the next generation of construction professionals across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Through this effort, ASM partnered with six vocational-technical high schools to provide a $500 award to a graduating student at each school who plans to enter the construction trades.

Participating schools included Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School, Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, Charles McCann Technical High School, Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School, Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School, and Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School. At each institution, school administrators selected one student who exemplified excellence, commitment, and promise within their chosen trade. School administrators at all schools emphasized how challenging it can be for their students to get started after graduation and they were very grateful for the generosity we were able to provide.

Beyond the financial award, the program created meaningful opportunities for connection between industry leaders and emerging talent. ASM staff and board members had the privilege of attending end-of-year award ceremonies to present these honors in person. These visits offered a firsthand look at the strength of today’s vocational programs and the dedication of students preparing to enter the workforce.

Participating in these ceremonies was especially impactful. Meeting students, educators, and families underscored the importance of investment in workforce development and highlighted the critical role vocational schools play in preparing skilled professionals. For ASM representatives, these moments reinforced a shared responsibility to support young people entering the trades and to help ensure a strong, sustainable future for the construction industry.

As workforce demands continue to evolve, initiatives like the Build the Future Awards reflect ASM’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the talent pipeline and supporting the industry at every level. These awards are made possible in part through the strong support of ASM members and the success of our annual golf tournament, which helps fund this and other workforce development efforts. We encourage those interested to get involved and support this important cause, as we are hoping to expand this program to more vocational high schools across the Commonwealth in the coming years.

For companies looking to stay connected, supported, and competitive, ASM offers far more than programs like this. Through advocacy, industry insights, safety resources, networking opportunities, and workforce development efforts, ASM is a strong partner for construction professionals across Massachusetts.
