The Downs to name three new businesses coming to the Town Center - July 15 at 11 a.m
Scarborough ME M&R Development, a multi-discipline residential and commercial development firm in Scarborough, will announce three new businesses coming to the rising Town Center at an even to celebrate the recent momentum on July 15 at 11 a.m. Café Luna will open in The Breakaway building, the first mixed-use building which is designed to welcome smaller, local restaurants and retailers. Three new businesses will be announced at the event.
Named and designed to honor of the once-thriving horse racing industry that has shaped the town’s history since 1950, The Breakaway name references a horse breaking away from the pack, and the building will be designed to reflect the equestrian and racing history of this historic site. A building size mural will be created by a local artist and appear on the building’s south side. Mural concepts will be revealed at the event.
The Downs is now home to 700+ housing units, 50+ businesses, and 1,500 jobs. As of 2025, the entire 577-acre development has an assessed value of over $353 million, which results in over $4 million in annual tax revenue to the town. With the Town Center construction, the assessed value is forecasted to bump to $463 million and total annual tax revenue of over $5 million. In just three years, 240,000 s/f of commercial space is under construction in the Town Center.
