Company Innovator Profile: A.D. Makepeace Company - Bridging Agricultural History and Innovative CRE

The A.D. Makepeace Company was founded in 1854 by Abel Denison Makepeace, known at the time as “the Cranberry King.” Seven generations later, the company has diversified into commercial and residential real estate development on lands it has accumulated over the years. It remains the largest cranberry grower in North America and a leader at Ocean Spray, the cooperative it helped found in 1930.
INSPIRED BY NATURE
Our agricultural heritage provides a unique perspective on real estate and land stewardship. Rosebrook Business Park and Rosebrook Place are nestled into bogs we have farmed for a century, creating an extraordinary setting for this mixed-use property. The location, at the I-495/I-195 interchange, provides quick access to Boston, Worcester, and Providence, all at the “gateway to Cape Cod.”
A TRUE MIX OF USES
Rosebrook features a 68,000 s/f medical office building housing Southcoast Health and Fresenius Medical, a 65-unit luxury apartment building, a 58-unit assisted living and memory care facility owned by All American Assisted Living, an 88-unit TownePlace Suites by Marriott, three restaurants, office space, and 165 acres of some of the region’s top producing cranberry bogs.
LAND STEWARDSHIP
Our 1,600 acres of cranberry bogs and associated uplands in Wareham, Plymouth, and Carver represent an open space landscape on their own, a favorite spot for bird watchers, dog-walkers, and folks out on their lunch break. Beyond this, our legacy of land conservation is unrivaled. The company has recorded, or is in the process of recording, conservation restrictions for more than 3,100 acres in Plymouth and Wareham over the past 15 years. Another 250 acres will be preserved in the future. In addition, Redbrook, ADM’s new village in South Plymouth, will ultimately contain some 125 acres of interstitial open space. Combined with historical land conservation initiatives, the total impact in our region is well over 5,000 acres of permanent conservation land.
