Construction begins on Hooksett landfill solar project - developed by ReVision Energy

Hooksett, NH Construction is underway on a new solar project that will transform a former municipal landfill into a long-term source of clean energy and taxpayer savings. 

Developed by New Hampshire-based ReVision Energy, the 1.34-megawatt solar array is expected to begin generating electricity in late summer 2027. The project will utilize 2,288 Qcells solar panels assembled in Georgia along with APA solar racking manufactured in the U.S. It will produce more than 1.65 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, offsetting approximately 720 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. 

The array will generate enough electricity to offset a portion of both the town and school district’s electricity consumption. 

“The Hooksett landfill solar project demonstrates how communities can turn previously unusable land into productive assets that provide environmental and economic benefits for decades,” said Andre Garron, town administrator. “This project allows Hooksett to advance its sustainability goals while reducing long-term energy costs for taxpayers and our public schools.” 

The project is being developed at no upfront cost to the town through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) financed by Blue Haven Solar, a solar financing entity of Blue Haven Initiative. Under the PPA agreement, Hooksett will have the option to purchase the system beginning in year six. With a year-six buyout, the town is projected to realize more than $10 million in lifetime energy savings. 

The project team includes New Hampshire-based partners Ayer Electric, Crown Point Excavation, and Nobis Group. 

Mark Zankel, ReVision Energy’s director of community solar, applauded the town. “Converting capped landfills to community solar just makes good financial and environmental sense. The Town has the opportunity to control its energy costs and save money, while the electricity generated each year by the array offsets the greenhouse gas emissions from more than 800,000 pounds of coal burned, 1.8 million miles driven by an average gas-powered vehicle, or nearly 90 million smartphone charges.” 

By repurposing a closed landfill for renewable energy generation, the town joins a growing number of New England communities turning underutilized land into public assets. ReVision Energy has completed solar installations on 11 landfill sites across New Hampshire and Maine, with three additional projects expected to be completed by 2027.
