Workbar to expand Back Bay location at 399 Boylston St.

October 9, 2026 - Owners Developers & Managers

Boston, MA Workbar, the region’s original coworking network, will expand its Back Bay location, located at 399 Boylston St., a Class-A office building owned and operated by DivcoWest, in spring 2027. Workbar Back Bay will now occupy the entire 20,000 s/f sixth floor of the building.

This expansion comes on the heels of Workbar’s recent Needham expansion, Harvard Square opening, and a new Union Square location coming soon.

Founded in 2009, Workbar has been a longtime staple of the Boston business community, developing a network of city and suburban locations intentionally designed around where (and how) people do their best work. Since its founding, Workbar has evolved and expanded across Greater Boston to support increasing demand for flexible workspaces, currently has 12 locations.

“Back Bay has been an incredibly strong market for Workbar, and this expansion reflects the demand we’re seeing from companies across Boston. They want high-quality workspaces that give their teams flexibility without sacrificing productivity” said Sarah Travers, CEO of Workbar, who was featured in Forbes as a pioneer in the coworking industry and thought leader on the future of work. “We’ve always believed people should have access to a network of great environments designed for productivity, close to where they live, work, and play. Expanding in Back Bay strengthens that network and gives our members and teams even more flexibility in one of Boston’s most important business districts.”

Workbar Back Bay was the world’s first coworking space to achieve WELL certification from the International Well Building Institute. Everything from lighting, air ventilation and temperature controls to ergonomic furniture is designed to optimize the health and wellbeing of the coworking members. The expansion will continue to feature Workbar’s signature activity-based coworking neighborhoods, private offices, meeting rooms and phone booths, along with a podcast studio.

399 Boylston is a 245,000 s/f Class A office building with newly completed $35 million tenant-focused upgrades, including a full-service fitness center, yoga studio, bike storage, locker rooms, and showers. The building’s location provides access to the MBTA Green Line, with connections to the Red and Orange Lines two blocks away, offering connectivity to talent and amenities across the city.

“Workbar’s decision to expand at 399 Boylston speaks to the strength of its business and the value and experience the building and location provide,” said Joseph Steffano, Senior Director of Asset Management at DivcoWest. “We’re excited to support Workbar’s continued growth with the additional space and flexibility its team needs. We value our tenant partnerships and look forward to working alongside Workbar for years to come. With this expansion, Workbar is continuing its efforts to support the creativity, innovation, and talent Boston is known for, while keeping its one-size-doesn’t-fit-all approach at the forefront of its mission.”

Workbar Back Bay’s expansion at 399 Boylston is expected to open its doors in spring 2027.
