Stack Design Build re-purposes 2 industrial shipping containers

Rendering, Dominican Republic medical building

In the spirit of this season of giving, several local building design and construction firms have collaborated on a project that will bring medical attention to thousands in the Dominican Republic.
Triton Containers, Ltd. donated 2 used industrial shipping containers. Anshen + Allen, a Boston-based healthcare architecture firm, provided pro bono design expertise. Then Pawtucket-based construction services company Stack Design Build re-purposed the 8 x 20 foot steel boxes into a clinic that will serve Dominican women and children with medical care.
The design concept comes from Containers to Clinics (C2C), a Boston-based non-profit organization. They have conceived a new approach to healthcare delivery for poor communities: take used industrial shipping containers and retrofit them to create small, inexpensive, highly mobile medical clinics to deliver healthcare services.
C2C has partnered with Infante Sano, a healthcare provider specializing in healthcare improvement programs.
The clinic will be shipped to Infante Sano's existing post in Bani, a rural community ninety minutes outside Santo Domingo, this month, and is expected to be fully operational by spring 2010.
