2020 Women in Construction: Christina Cleaves, Project Surveyor at Hancock Associates

What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months? My most notable project I have worked on in the last year is an existing conditions survey for the White Cliffs Estate in Northborough. The home on the property was originally built and owned by Daniel Wesson of Smith & Wesson gunsmiths as a summer home. Later on it was used as a function hall where my wedding reception was held. The town of Northborough purchased the property and is looking to preserve and find a new use for it. I enjoy working on projects that ensure history is preserved and not destroyed.

When I’m not working I am… taking care of my 6 year old son, crafting or cooking.

What are you doing differently in 2020 that has had a positive impact on your career? Staying focused on my day-to-day tasks and helping to educate the younger employees.

What trends are you seeing in your field this year? Traditional steel column methods are becoming less frequent and we are seeing more pedestal style building designs.

Who or what inspired you to join the construction industry? My grandfather inspired me to pursue a career in survey. As a little girl, I would watch him repair drafting machines and I would often draw up my own “plans” alongside him. When I was 14 he gave me a box of drafting tools and a plumb bob, which he said I would use one day; and from then on I pursued my interest in mechanical and computer aided drafting and eventually surveying. That plumb bob sits on my desk as a reminder of how such a small gift could spark an interest in an amazing career.
