Spring is officially here, and with that comes the joy of a new season in New England. With warm days and cool nights, it is easy to remember why the change in season is just one of the many perks of living in the Northeast. Just as the buds on the trees begin to bloom, Warwick, too, has many new projects sprouting up across the city.

Arooga’s Grill House & Sports Bar is the newest eatery to join the city. Located on Greenwich Ave., just minutes from Rhode Island and Warwick Malls, Arooga’s boasts an above average sports bar experience. With a delicious, house-made menu, perfectly chilled beers, and TVs galore, it’s the perfect place to grab some grub, watch the game and enjoy some serious fun. They also offer free Wi-Fi, Buzztime trivia and NTN Texas Hold ‘em. What’s not to love?

Work continues to bud at the Pontiac Mills. With demolition underway and a restoration plan in place to restore the mill to its former glory, work began in March and has been moving along swiftly. The historic mill, with the exception of the NYLO Hotel, dates back to the mid-1850s and is on the National Register of Historic Places, has been largely vacant for a number of years.

Though the passage of time compromised the structural integrity of some of the facilities, much of the complex will be restored and transformed into a vibrant, mixed-use property that will promote further economic development, tourism and recreational opportunities in the city, while simultaneously creating both temporary and permanent jobs. Most importantly, however, is the opportunity the city has to make sure this important piece of Warwick’s history is restored and preserved for years to come. The mill, which is slated for mixed-use development, will house residential, office and retail spaces.

The Greenwich Mills has also undergone restoration some years ago and is now fully functional. Located on the Warwick/East Greenwich line, the mill is home to more than 20 businesses. The mill, which is known for its modern look while maintaining its historical integrity, includes four buildings comprising more than 100,000 s/f. Built at the height of the region’s industrial might, the complex was originally erected to support the soaring textile production and distribution in Rhode Island. Now, the mill can accommodate commercial, business and retail spaces. With views of Narragansett Bay, Greenwich Bay and historic East Greenwich, the mill is a premiere location centered conveniently 15 minutes from the Providence and TF Green Airport.

Rhode Island Mall will also be touting a new look soon. As work on the mall continues, developers went in front of the zoning board to pitch a new sign for the property. The large, freestanding sign will be higher and closer to the property line than the old one, but will add a dramatic touch to the street façade. The zoning board unanimously approved their request.

With spring here and beach days just around the corner we will also be welcoming back many of Warwick’s favorite pastimes. Little league, softball and soccer will be back. Nights spent at Oakland Beach eating up Iggy’s while enjoying the sweeping views of the bay. And of course stopping for some soft serve on the way home! All familiar reasons to love spring in Rhode Island.

Scott Avedisian is the mayor of Warwick and the chairman of the RIPTA board of directors.
