Holliston, MA A leading electrical contractor throughout New England and the Southeast for nearly five decades, Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric) understands that its success would not be possible without its people. The company is incredibly grateful to be able to “Work with the Best” and recognizes the important contributions that its team members make. Day in and day out, women at Griffin Electric are making their mark and helping the company to deliver projects and exceed client expectations. As a supporter of women in construction, the company is proud to not only champion its own team members but is also committed to helping facilitate opportunities for all women in the trades.
Being a leader in the industry is about more than just building projects, and Griffin Electric has always strived to spearhead the type of actions that can help better people’s lives and lead to a brighter future for the construction field. The company has taken an active role in promoting construction to different audiences in an effort to increase access to the skilled trades, especially for those who may not be as aware of the great opportunities that a career in this field can offer.
Griffin Electric participates in school visits and career fairs throughout the year, targeting both vocational and traditional schools across New England as well as in the areas of its regional office locations in Pelham, AL; Doraville, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Raleigh-Durham, NC. While things are slowly changing, many high school students are still guided toward traditional higher education, so it is important they know that there are many opportunities for their future. The company prioritizes working closely with a range of organizations as part of its promotional and outreach efforts. Women’s Army Corps Veterans Association (WACVA), Women in the Building Trades, and Women Veterans Network are some of the many organizations that the company has been able to spread awareness about one of the most powerful gateways to the skilled trades: apprenticeship.
Through its fully accredited in-house Apprenticeship Training Program, Griffin Electric has helped foster the development of many women and men as they transition from first-year students to fully licensed electricians and telecom technicians. For more than thirty years, the company’s debt-free program has offered an alternative to traditional schooling, where apprentices undergo a mix of classroom instruction, hands-on training, and on-the-job learning over the course of four years. The program is offered on-site at its Holliston, MA headquarters and at each of the company’s Southeast office locations. Griffin Electric apprentices not only earn excellent compensation and full benefits, but are eligible for wage increases every six months based on grades and work performance.
While many women across the company have kicked off their careers by successfully navigating the apprenticeship pathway, Griffin Electric recognizes that no two journeys are quite the same. As part of its merit shop philosophy, employees are encouraged to take their careers in their own hands and pursue a wide range of goals. Several women who have graduated from the program and recently attained their electrical licensures are already charting their own course. Some of these women have finished teaching requirements and are currently serving as instructors in the very program they recently completed, having a direct hand in shaping future leaders of the company. Another team member has undergone additional trainings and certifications that will help her take on greater responsibilities on the jobsite. Others have even taken their careers in a different direction and have transitioned to positions in the office. The company is committed to doing what it can to offer support to employees no matter what future they envision for themselves.
In order to truly be “the best,” the company understands that it must provide team members with the type of tools that will enable them to perform their work safely and efficiently. Griffin Electric has always believed that learning never stops, and proudly offers all employees both job related and personal improvement resources throughout the year. Beyond a wide range of voluntary training opportunities, most of which are offered both remotely and at no cost to employees, the company also grants each team member $2,000 of annual tuition reimbursement so they can pursue additional educational programs that support career objectives. Graduates of Griffin Electric’s Apprenticeship Training Program even have an opportunity to get the best of both worlds: the ability to attain their electrical or telecom licensure and earn an associate degree or higher thanks to the company’s partnership with local colleges. By completing the apprenticeship program, graduates will have earned nearly half of the credits needed toward the degree, and Griffin Electric pays up to 70% or more of tuition.
As women throughout Griffin Electric continue to pave their own way and contribute to its success, the company remains committed to supporting them every step of the way. Griffin Electric is also committed to promoting the skilled trades as an excellent career pathway for future success. The company is incredibly proud to employ such a talented team of individuals who come from varied backgrounds, and each person brings important perspectives to make the company stronger as a whole.
