What do you wish more women knew about the opportunities available in the construction industry today? As a woman working in the construction industry, I wish more women knew that there are endless paths this industry offers beyond swinging a hammer. Of course, there is the onsite hands-on work and physical aspect, but there is also the project management, estimating and design elements that are just as important and are critical to any successful project. As a project manager, you get to communicate daily with so many different people in various roles like subcontractors, clients, and architects. Your decision-making and conversations with teammates on and off the jobsite truly matter.
What is one piece of advice or perspective you would share with women beginning their careers in the construction industry? One piece of advice that someone shared with me at the beginning of my career in construction that I now share with anyone starting their careers, is ask questions and be ready to learn. There is so much to learn in the construction industry which is exciting because every day brings along something new, but it can also be extremely daunting. Construction rewards consistency and confidence so although you may not know everything day one, stay open-minded and curious and you will be successful.
What habit or routine helps you stay focused or motivated during a busy week? My routine is what keeps me motivated during a busy week. I make sure to move my body in some way daily whether it’s going to the gym, or walking.
