March 24, 2010 - Retail
Big Y Foods, Inc. plans to open a world class market in Franklin. Big Y's proposed 55,000 s/f supermarket will be located at 348 East Central St. (Rte. 140). The location is currently the site of the former Franklin Buffet Restaurant. Site plans have been filed for approval with the town by Topsfield Development LLC in order to provide a traffic signal to line up with the main driveway to the Franklin Town Hall. This market will employ between 150 and 175 people.
As a Big Y world class market, it will offer not only customer service but also a wide assortment of products and specialty items with added convenience in each department with a focus on saving customers time, energy and money.
This market will represent Big Y's 58th store and will represent an investment of over $18 million into the community. In addition, the project will provide several opportunities for local contractors during the construction process. A fall 2011 opening is expected.
A company strongly committed to giving back to the communities surrounding its stores, Big Y donates food valued at more than $4.5 million to local non-profit organizations, schools, churches, and educational programs each year. Big Y also awards 300 scholarships worth $250,000 annually to academically outstanding students in their market area.
Headquartered in Springfield, Big Y is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England.
