Boston, MA The Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA) is pleased to name the winners of the following 2016 BSA Design Awards:

Accessible Design; Education Facilities Design; Sustainable Design; Unbuilt Architecture and Design; Honor Awards for Design Excellence; the Harleston Parker Medal; and the People’s Choice Award, selected among the Harleston Parker Medal finalists.

The sole criterion was design excellence. Juries also considered evidence of holistic design thinking, consideration for universal access, sustainability, sensitivity to site, innovation, and aesthetics. 

Other award types, given to individuals by their peers, included the Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award, BSA Award of Honor medal, the BSA Commonwealth Award, and the BSA Honorary Membership.

 To launch the BSA’s 150th anniversary and honor all the winners, BSA Space is showcasing the recipients of the 2016 BSA Design Awards through April 3. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

 Alex Krieger has combined a career of teaching and practice, dedicating himself in both to improving the quality of place and life in our major urban areas. Alex is the founding Principal of Chan Krieger Sieniewicz which merged with NBBJ in 2009. He is a Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he has taught since 1977. During his tenure he has served as Chairman of the Department of Urban Planning and Design, Director of the Urban Design Program, and Associate Chairman of the Department of Architecture. Alex is a frequent advisor to mayors and their planning staffs, and serves on a number of boards and commissions, including the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.

Award Hierarchy: Honor Awards: the highest awards. These projects are the “best of the best.” Each one elevated the hearts and minds of our juries by expressing both technical and aesthetic design excellence. Awards: admirable and innovative work that is successfully executed from concept through construction. Citations: those projects that caught the jury’s eye for design, technical, humanitarian, or other reasons but were not formally awarded.

BSA Award of Honor This honor is given to individuals whose lifetime contributions to the profession and to the BSA have been uncommonly profound.

Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award This new award recognizes design excellence by an architect under 40. The award is named for Earl R. Flansburgh FAIA, a distinguished Boston architect who generously supported emerging professionals and advocated for women architects. This award is co-sponsored by the Flansburgh Family.

Harleston Parker Medal The Harleston Parker Medal award was established in 1921 by J. Harleston Parker in memory of his father. The first award was granted by the BSA in 1923. The intent of the award is to acknowledge the “single most beautiful building or other structure” built in the metropolitan Boson area in the past 10 years. The award is co-sponsored by the City of Boston.

People’s Choice Award An online competition organized by the BSA and hosted by bostonmagazine.com where members of the public go head-to-head with the 2016 Harleston Parker Medal jury to decide which among this year’s finalists is the most beautiful new building in the Boston. The winner is announced at the BSA Design Awards Gala.

BSA Commonwealth Award The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding influence on our built environment or our awareness of it.

BSA Honorary Membership The purpose of this award is to honor an individual whose contributions to the Boston’s design community are of outstanding significance and value.
