Stillwater Worsted's Mill No. 4 - Harrisville, RI

Durkee Brown Viveiros Werenfels Architects has completed the rehabilitation of Stillwater Worsted's 71,500 s/f Mill No. 4 for the Woonsocket Neighborhood Development Corp.
DBVW's rehabilitation of the 100 year old worsted mill provides 1,2 and 3-family affordable and market-rate housing in northern Rhode Island. The project, which is part of a larger effort to create a village center for Harrisville, has created commercial space and 47 housing units within the mill building. The residential units have 12-14 foot ceilings and many have riverfront terraces overlooking the Clear River.
The exterior of the building underwent a complete historic restoration, including concrete and masonry repairs, new windows and doors, roof replacement and substantial reconstruction of the clock tower.
Inside, the new apartments incorporate sustainable elements such as energy efficient lighting, low-consumption plumbing fixtures, recycled materials, daylighting, and geothermal heating and cooling.
A new municipal library is located adjacent to the mill and future phases of the village center effort may include adaptive re-use of the remaining mill complex buildings as well as new infill construction of the housing and/or mixed-use structures.
The project team included: NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley, client; Nation Wide Construction Corp., general contractor; Yoder + Tidwell, structural engineer; SFM Engineering, civil engineer; Wozny Barbar & Associates, Inc.,; M/E/P/FP engineer.
