Cambridge, MA East Cambridge Savings Bank president and CEO Gilda Nogueira was presented with the 2022 Margaret Fuller Award at the recent Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House 120th Anniversary Gala Celebration held on October 20th at the Sheraton Commander Hotel.

Founded in 1902 on Cherry St. in Cambridge’s Port Neighborhood the Margaret Fuller House was one of the early settlement houses – a place to provide resources and support for nearby residents and recent immigrants to the area. Today, the house provides an array of services to local residents including childcare, youth and family services, and food assistance including a food pantry.

Also honored at the 120th anniversary event in addition to Nogueira were U.S. senator Elizabeth Warren and Tim Rowe, entrepreneur and founder of the Cambridge Innovation Center.

“This is truly an honor, and I am so grateful to the Margaret Fuller House for this recognition,” said Nogueira. “More importantly, all of us at the bank appreciate the great work that the Margaret Fuller House does for the community – the work it has done since 1902, and the work that’s still to come in the years ahead. The breadth and depth of services offered at the House is incredible. The staff at Margaret Fuller make a direct and positive impact every day on nearby residents whose lives are improved and enriched because of these vital programs.”

Marc Jacobs, interim executive director of the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House said, “We are proud of our 120-year history and congratulate our deserving honorees. Gilda is an excellent example of community involvement and support and leads East Cambridge Savings Bank as a responsible and good corporate citizen. We appreciate the work that she and the bank do to support the Cambridge community.”

In addition to the Margaret Fuller Award, Nogueira was recognized earlier this year by the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) with their 2022 Person of the Year Award, and by the Somerville Chamber of Commerce with the John W. Fitzgerald Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2021.

The House’s namesake, Margaret Fuller, was a pioneering woman who was the first American to write a book about women’s equality and was the first woman war correspondent to report from combat conditions, among other accomplishments. The current house at 71 Cherry St. was her childhood home where she was born in 1810.
