Gale Assocs. to lead rehab of Mansfield Municipal Airport runway

Mansfield, MA Gale Associates, Inc., through its Airport Engineering & Planning Group, is providing engineering design and construction administration services for the rehabilitation of Mansfield Municipal Airport’s primary airfield infrastructure. Construction began on July 13, 2026, with the airport closed to fixed-wing aircraft for three months while improvements are completed.

The project includes reconstruction of runway 14-32, taxiway A, and the connecting stub taxiways, along with taxiways B, C, D edge lighting to meet current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pavement design standards. Additional improvements include upgrades to the airport’s drainage system, installation of new airfield electrical infrastructure, guidance signs, runway and taxiway lighting, navigational aids, a new electrical vault, pavement markings, and site restoration.

Although fixed-wing operations will be suspended during construction, Boston MedFlight will continue operating from the airport, ensuring uninterrupted emergency medical transport services for communities throughout Southern Mass. and R.I.

The rehabilitation marks the first reconstruction of the airport’s primary runway since 1993. In a unique connection to the airport’s history, Gale airport development professional Dave Dinneen served as Mansfield Municipal Airport manager during the previous reconstruction project and is now contributing to the airport’s latest modernization effort.

Located two miles southeast of downtown, Mansfield Municipal Airport serves the region’s general aviation community and is home to a flight school, aircraft maintenance facilities, hangar developments, Boston MedFlight, and airport management operations.

“This project represents an important investment in the long-term safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of Mansfield Municipal Airport,” said Matthew Caron, AICP, director of aviation. “We are proud to support the town of Mansfield and the Mass. Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division, and the FAA in delivering infrastructure improvements that will benefit airport users and the surrounding communities for years to come.”

The project is being completed under Gale Associates’ on-call engineering services agreement with the town of Mansfield. The project will be funded through the FAA, the Mass. Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division, and the town of Mansfield.
