Griffin Hospital receives Inaugural ACHA Award

The American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) honored Griffin Hospital as one of two recipients of 2014 Legacy Project Awards. The other recipient was the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The inaugural awards were presented at the International Summit & Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction (known as the PDC Summit) on March 18, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. William Karanian, AIA, ACHA, a principal with The S/L/A/M Collaborative, Inc., and architect for more than two decades, nominated Griffin Hospital, and is the architect of record. Patrick Charmel is Griffin's president CEO. "A legacy is a gift that is passed down from one generation to another. A healthcare building that exhibits high quality designs and encourages high performance functioning with minimal upkeep is a legacy to those who inherit the building," said Connie McFarland, FAIA, FACHA, president of the American College of Healthcare Architects. "Griffin represents an extraordinary translation of a culture and philosophy into design. Its legacy is that Griffin successfully demonstrates how a project can directly and positively influence human behavior," said juror Philip Tobey, FAIA, FACHA, senior vice president of SmithGroup, JJR.
