Hobbs Brook Management LLC (HBM) has been recognized by the Boston Business Journal (BBJ) as a 2010 Corporate Citizenship Partner. The firm and its partner, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), were honored for their collaboration through the Bedford VA's Compensated Work Therapy program within the Education & Training category of the BBJ's awards program.
The mission of the HBM/VA partnership is to welcome veterans into a productive, fulfilling employment role while providing the opportunity to transition over time back into civilian society. The work program is rigidly structured with very high standards set by HBM, and to which the participants must adhere in order to maintain their placement. These placements may last as long as a year or more, and in some cases result in permanent employment. Those who succeed in the program and do not stay with HBM may move on to other CWT sponsored programs or transfer out of the program altogether. The result of this program provides an income source, social interaction, and opportunity for advancement within an established company.
"We have had a strong relationship with Hobbs Brook Management for more than 35 years, and the staff of Hobbs Brook has always been willing to work with our disabled veteran population, often making accommodations for those with more serious issues. As the number of kitchens at Hobbs Brook has grown, so has the importance of our mutually beneficial relationship," said John Bowers, LRC, supervisor of the Bedford VA CWT program. Adds Michael Lalli, second vice president for building services at Hobbs Brook, "As long as the CWT offers the program, Hobbs Brook Management will be involved. This is a great program for us because it offers a reliable and consistent resource for us to staff our entry-level requirements. We're also very proud that we have the ability to support such a worthwhile program."
Each year, the Boston Business Journal recognizes corporations and nonprofits that have demonstrated innovation and developed best practices in specific partnerships with nonprofits at any level of engagement, including volunteer work, cash donations, in-kind donations and board participation. Nominated companies are judges on the standards of mission, innovation, impact and sustainability, and an independent selection committee chooses honorees in the areas of community health, education, the arts, and innovation.
"The partnership with Hobbs Brook has allowed many veterans to get back on their feet, establish housing, find competitive jobs, and in some cases enable many to reunite with their families. Due to Hobbs Brook's support, many veterans have been able to establish the foundation they needed to repair their lives," said Bowers.
This year honorees were recognized at the Citizenship Summit, a celebratory breakfast held at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel on September 10, 2010. Allowed only a three-word acceptance speech, Tom Dusel, president and chief operating officer of Hobbs Brook Management received the award with the sentiment "Honor our veterans".
