Boston, MA JGE Architecture + Design has completed Logan Square Residences, a transformative new development in the Hyde Park neighborhood of the city that delivers 63 affordable one-bedroom apartments for adults aged 55+, along with ground-floor commercial space and a collection of community-oriented amenities designed to support active, connected living.
Developed by B’nai B’rith Housing (BBH), a regional nonprofit dedicated to easing Greater Boston’s housing crisis, the project introduces much-needed senior housing to Logan Sq., one of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods for income-restricted homes.
Logan Square Residences replaces a previously low-density corner with a vibrant residential environment that prioritizes wellness, accessibility, and neighborhood engagement. The five-story building includes a welcoming residential lobby, a fitness room, a library/lounge, and a community room, all anchored by a generous outdoor courtyard that offers seating areas, a water feature, a green wall, and space for recreation and respite. The ground-floor commercial space will further activate River Street, supporting local businesses and contributing to the neighborhood’s evolving urban fabric.
The development responds directly to the rising demand for affordable senior housing in the city. With only 7% of Hyde Park’s housing stock classified as income-restricted, compared to 10% in West Roxbury and 21% in Jamaica Plain, the neighborhood has long faced a significant shortfall. By creating a service-rich, amenity-forward community, Logan Square Residences provides active adults with long-term stability while strengthening the social and economic fabric of Logan Sq. Leasing is underway, with the building already 30% occupied.
Designed to meet Passive House certification standards and the city’s DND Zero Emission Buildings requirements, Logan Square Residences is an all-electric, high-performance building that reduces energy consumption, enhances resident comfort, and supports long-term operational sustainability.
JGE incorporated cost-effective strategies that balance environmental responsibility with durable, resident-friendly design. The project also advances a walkable, transit-accessible neighborhood environment.
, positioned adjacent to the Hyde Park municipal building’s senior programs, the YMCA, and the public library, allowing residents to remain active and engaged within their community. Strong support from the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and local stakeholders helped bring the vision to life.
“From the outset, our goal was to design a community that supports seniors not just with housing, but with a true sense of belonging,” said Jonathan Garland, president and founder of JGE Architecture + Design. “Logan Square Residences brings together thoughtful architecture, access to outdoor space, and opportunities for daily connection. It strengthens an important corner of Hyde Park and reflects the kind of community-driven development we believe can positively shape the future of Boston’s neighborhoods.”
“BBH is committed to building high-quality homes where seniors can age affordably, safely, and with dignity,” said Susan Gittelman, Executive Director. “Logan Square Residences reflects that commitment. This project strengthens the neighborhood while offering older adults the opportunity and connection they deserve.”
City officials, project partners, and community members joined BBH and JGE at the end of 2025 to mark the building’s opening with a ribbon-cutting celebration. The completion of Logan Square Residences stands as a meaningful collaboration between JGE and BBH, demonstrating how thoughtful architecture and mission-driven development can shape stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
