Kaplan Construction completes additions for Miltons Store for Men - Architectural design provided by Arrowstreet Inc.

Kaplan Construction, a general contractor and construction management firm providing comprehensive building programs to commercial, healthcare, multi-family, worship, institutional, and historic rehabilitation/adaptive reuse clients across Greater Boston, has completed work on two new additions to Miltons The Store for Men. Working on an accelerated, phased work schedule last summer and fall, Kaplan performed and completed the work without interruption to Miltons' operations and in time for the busy holiday shopping season. It is the second time in 15 years that Kaplan and Miltons have collaborated on a major construction project at this location. The enhancements to the well-known retail shop can be seen from the east end of Chestnut Hill Sq., a new lifestyle and retail destination located on Rte. 9 eastbound. The additions include a two-story, steel frame and glass façade entrance, added display windows, and new tile and EIFS finishes. A second, two-story addition was constructed to house new fitting rooms and a customer lounge area, as well as stock and display space. Early on during the construction, Kaplan encountered a structural issue with an existing exterior wall. Kaplan helped engineer a solution, avoiding impact to the original project schedule. Also included in the project were select back-of-house renovations. Changes were made to the layout of an existing storage room, benefitting employees and providing additional space for the sales floor. Kaplan took the previously long and narrow storage area and created a square-shaped stock room, making it faster for employees to access supplies. A tailor shop was also added to the back of the new space. "The attention and care that Kaplan put into this project allowed Miltons to remain open throughout construction - but more importantly - we were ready for the busiest shopping season of the year," said Miltons COO Bill Leva. "As promised, our new additions were completed in time for Black Friday. And our new glass-fronted entryway will also serve as a wonderful showcase for Miltons clothing throughout the year, as the exciting retail developments continue to ramp up at Chestnut Hill Square." Architectural design for the project was provided by Arrowstreet Inc. Kaplan was responsible for the design/build engineering of the mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and plumbing systems.
