The Kendall Square Association recently celebrated the opening of a new Cambridge landing overlooking the Broad Canal which connects the heart of Kendall Square directly to the Charles River with a waterfront walkway, boat landing and park.
The new park, which weaves together the Cambridge Landing buildings, is the place where people who live and work in Kendall Square can come to play, shop, dine and have fun in a park overlooking the water. There is space for people to relax, sit on the grass, read a book, cruise the net, have a coffee or take a kayak ride. The Cambridge Landing buildings, including Watermark and future sites for a hotel, office and lofts, are being developed by Twining Properties. The Kendall Square Corporation (KSC) is a partnership between BioMed Realty Trust, Twining Properties and Constellation Center. KSC operates the public open space surrounding their buildings in Kendall Square including an ice skating rink, concert venue, farmer's market and now the boat landing.
Cambridge Landing includes the buildings along Broad Canal St. that are now connected by a series of open spaces with unique identities and activities. Turning off Third St. onto Broad Canal St., The Walk is a wide tree lined sidewalk with shops and restaurants that will open this winter. The Walk leads to The Landing at Broad Canal where canoes, kayaks and shells can be launched or rented from Charles River Canoe & Kayak. Visitors can continue walking along the newly completed Waterfront Walkway which sits above the canal and links Cambridge Landing directly to the recreation paths along the Charles River. North of the canal is a terraced park where visitors can relax, read, catch some sun or take in a special outdoor event. Dan Biederman, president of BRV Corp., who was the mastermind behind the transformation of Bryant Park in New York City, has developed a detailed program of outdoor venues for each space. Landscape architects Sasaki Associates designed the space to fit the Biederman program.
