January 03, 2008 - Owners Developers & Managers

R. Winder Nordblom

I am very excited and honored to be the 2008 president of the Institute of Real Estate Managements Boston Metropolitan chapter #4. The chapter leadership team is very strong and energized to meet the chapter goals for 2008. Our educational offering and Chapter meetings will be familiar; however other will be new offering in different venues. This year we will be hold a membership meeting on February 8 at Loon Mountain for our IREM ski day. A new OSHA training seminar on March 5th & 6th at Gillette Stadium. We will also hold events in Burlington Vermont, Portland Maine and Manchester New Hampshire. On May 17th region #1 will be celebrating the Chapter's 70th and the Institutes 75th anniversaries. The event will be at Granite Links on a Saturday evening and everyone is invited.

New England Chapter #4 was started on May 4 1938. The First Chapter President was Robert C. Nordblom and the first Vice President was Harry Gilbert. You may ask why mention these two individuals? Robert C. Nordblom was my grandfather and was involved with the institute in 1934. Note that the Institutes educational programs did not exist and the CPM® had not even been thought of. In fact the only educations at that time were articles in the Journal Of Real Estate Management which was first published in 1934. This was also a time when property management theory was being formalized and developed. In 1936 the Institute starting offering their courses. In early 1938 some of the first CPM® designations were earned.
Well back to our two heroes. The significance is that both families are currently managing property. And both firms are fourth generation companies.
If you can name both firms and n at the January 10th meeting you will win a prize.
I will leave you with three words to describe next year.
Educate - Celebrate - Participate
Check out next month's message for more Chapter History.
