Richards, director for the Boston Chapter of Lambda Alpha, passes away

Lowell Richards died unexpectedly of a heart attack. Richards served as a director for the Boston Chapter of Lambda Alpha for several years and as a harbor master each summer on the harbor cruise. All can attest to his leadership, selflessness and extraordinary generosity in the greater Boston community. He used his knowledge and expertise as director of real estate for MassPort to make wonderful things happen. In the words of his colleagues at MassPort, "It would be impossible to summarize all that Lowell has done or what he meant to this authority and to the city of Boston. He was known by almost everyone here at MassPort, as well as by those throughout the city. His work took him to nearly every department in the authority. There were also few civic organizations or endeavors outside the authority Lowell was not involved in, so strong was his desire to make a positive contribution to our community. As everyone knows, Lowell had the freedom to be or to do anything he chose. But he chose public service because he was a builder at heart, a quality he shared with his early mentor, the late Boston mayor Kevin White, on whose funeral honor guard he served just five days ago. And through his work with mayor Menino as one of the principal creators of Boston's new South Boston Seaport District, Lowell helped carry on mayor White's legacy as a builder of a new Boston. Those of us who had the privilege of working with Lowell at MassPort for the past 13 years will always remember his enthusiasm, his integrity, his encyclopedic knowledge of this city and its culture, his professionalism, but most of all his friendship."
