Tighe & Bond wins CSCE'S ACE award for roadway improvement

The Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE) presented Tighe & Bond with a 2014 Transportation Achievement in Civil Engineering (ACE) Award for roadway improvements associated with the development of Bridgeport Hospital's Park Ave. campus. Presentation of the award took place at the annual ACE Awards Program on May 13 at the Aqua Turf Club.
The Bridgeport Hospital Park Ave. campus, which is under construction and part of the Yale-New Haven Health System, is a 100,000 s/f treatment facility that will provide regional care for patients. The roadway improvements - including the addition of a modern roundabout - will support the traffic generated by the Park Ave. campus, and address existing operational deficiencies along the Park Ave. intersections with the Merritt Pkwy. ramps (Exit 47) in Trumbull/Fairfield.
Tighe & Bond's traffic and parking group conducted extensive traffic studies and developed concepts for review and approval by the three municipalities involved: Trumbull, Fairfield and Bridgeport.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), and the Office of State Traffic Administration (OSTA), also provided approvals. The ensuing design process involved a partnership with these municipalities and agencies to finalize a design that includes a modern roundabout at an expressway ramp terminus, only the second one in the State of Connecticut. (The first roundabout at a ramp terminus in New Haven was also designed by Tighe & Bond.) This partnership process allowed the design to proceed efficiently.
Roadway construction for these improvements began in May, and is expected to be completed later this year. Tighe & Bond also will be involved throughout the construction phase, providing construction oversight and administration.
