United Steel, Inc. honored with three industry awards

January 20, 2017 - Connecticut

East Hartford, CT United Steel, Inc., New England’s largest fabricator and erector of structural steel and miscellaneous metals, has received three honors from industry organizations throughout the region.  The company was named one of the “Top Workplaces” in the Greater Hartford region, won a merit award from the Massachusetts chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors organization, and received a community service award from the Connecticut Construction Industry Association.  Each award was presented to United Steel during the last quarter of 2016.

The “Top Workplaces” award is given out annually by The Hartford Courant based on an independent survey of local employees.  This is the third year in a row United Steelreceived this recognition for mid-sized businesses in the Greater Hartford area.  This year, United Steel also received the 2016 Outstanding Appreciation award based on a nomination by its employees.

The Massachusetts Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors recognized United Steel for its problem solving and challenging work on the Worcester Regional Transit Authority’s Maintenance and Operations Facility.  As part of the structural steelwork for this new 151,000 s/f building, United Steel manufactured and installed a 48,000 lb. steel truss that was 17 feet high by 80 feet long.  USI worked outside the building footprint (an unusual process) to install this large piece, relocating its 250-ton crane (with 200-foot boom) to eight separate locations to complete the job.

The third award, which came from the Connecticut Construction Industry Association, honored United Steel’s community-based Steel Day 2016 program.  United Steel hosted community tours of its 175,000 s/f automated manufacturing facility (including new contamination-free clean room), and hosted product demonstrations from leading manufacturers and suppliers throughout the region.  United Steel also brought together industry leaders from the global manufacturer Hilti Corp., Infra Metals, Canam, Max Weiss, Maine-Oxy, Airgas, Atlantic Fastener, Ct. Galvanizing, MSC, UCONN and the U.S. Army to discuss the state of the vital steeltrade industry.

“This has been a very productive and exciting year for our company and these three awards reflect the hard work and dedication of everyone at United Steel,” said Ken Corneau, president of United Steel. “The construction industry is full of many talented people and companies so we greatly appreciate being recognized among some of the finest.”
