Salem, MA Partners HealthCare and the North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) have selected Walsh Brothers, Inc. to perform construction management services for an expansion of the North Shore Medical Center Salem campus. The project will include construction of a new four-story building and renovation of the Spaulding North Shore Building, as well as significant upgrades to the campus infrastructure.

This project also supports the consolidation of NSMC’s Lynn and Salem Acute Care facilities, a plan designed to improve care and coordination across a wide spectrum of health services. This plan realigns practices and facilities to make high-quality care more cost-effective and efficient and improves access to the community-based care for North Shore residents.

Highlights of this project, scheduled for completion in 2019, will include:

• A new 113,000 s/f, four-story building to include a new emergency department, mechanical space, one floor for 24 medical-surgical inpatient beds, and one floor to be shelled for a future 24 bed medical-surgical unit with vertical and horizontal connecting corridors to the existing Davenport Building.

• Converting the current Spaulding North Shore to a Center of Excellence in Behavioral Health that will be directly aligned with Mass. General Hospital, and will add 26 new beds to the region for psychiatry and behavioral health services with a shelled floor for a future 30-bed psychiatric unit.

• Central Utility Plant infrastructure upgrades will include installation of a 1,200 ton chiller and cooling tower and two 2,000 kW emergency generators.

• The project has been designed to achieve the sustainability standards of Partners HealthCare and will pursue LEED Silver Certification.

“This consolidation of inpatient care coupled with the expansion of outpatient community-based services will provide local families with a more accessible and effective health care resource for years to come” said Robert Norton, president, NSMC. “We look forward to working with Walsh Brothers to bring this state-of-the-art, first-class medical facility to all residents of the North Shore.”

“This significant undertaking by NSMC and Partners HealthCare demonstrates their commitment to deliver the highest quality care to all patients, especially to those where critical services are in great demand, said Richard Walsh, president and CEO of Walsh Bros.
